Culture could be a vague word and not always easy to capture. It could be visible but also invisible and difficult to measure. We may also encounter some situations that we want to discuss and describing the similarities or difference of the cultures by countries, however, this is not an easy task to do, since how one perceive the culture may differ. Hofstede Insights offer an interesting tool to solve this sort of issues.

Who is Geert Hofstede?
Geert Hofstede is a scholar who has investigated the influence of culture from the aspect of comparative intercultural research. He is know for establishing an empirical model to explore and compare cultures through “dimensions” of national culture.
“Every person’s mental programming is partly unique, partly shared with others.”Geert Hofstede, Culture’s Consequences: International Differences in Work-Related Values. Beverly Hills CA: Sage Publications, 1980
Hofstede makes a point, how we all have uniqueness but also similarities. Global Citizenship Platform would like to introduce their tool, “Country Comparison” which is part of their product called Culture Compass™.
What is “Country Comparison” offered by Hofstede Insights?
Country Comparison is a web tool which allows the user to investigate the features of national culture from following six dimensions:
- POWER DISTANCE INDEX (PDI)
- INDIVIDUALISM VERSUS COLLECTIVISM (IDV)
- MASCULINITY VERSUS FEMININITY (MAS)
- UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE INDEX (UAI)
- LONG TERM ORIENTATION VERSUS SHORT TERM NORMATIVE ORIENTATION (LTO)
- INDULGENCE VERSUS RESTRAINT (IVR)
In the tool, users can select countries of interest and get an overview of the six cultural dimensions. Users are able to choose one or multiple countries if interested in making comparisons. It shows index per dimension and also explanation by texts.
Country comparison tool is offered through web and app (Google Play and App store). This may be a nice introduction to understand the features of the countries you are interested in, or an ice-breaker tool to engage into deeper discussion with your peers or students to discuss how you think about the results shown by this tool 😉
